There is a statistic about the world’s rivers that should be more widely known: roughly 60% of them no longer complete their journey. They begin in mountains or plains, flow for hundreds or thousands of kilometres, and then simply stop — absorbed by irrigation channels, municipal water systems, and reservoirs before they can reach the ocean.
