Cookie Preferences
Last updated: 29 July 2026
This page explains what cookies and browser storage The Statistician uses, why, and what you can control. We use strictly necessary cookies for authentication and payments. The non-subscribers and Mean plan subscribers also see ads served by Google AdSense, which may set advertising cookies. Outlier subscribers are ad-free.
Strictly Necessary
Always onThese cookies are required for the site to function and cannot be disabled.
What sets them
- Clerk — session token cookie that keeps you logged in. Set when you sign in, cleared when you log out. Required for subscriber access.
- Stripe — cookies set during the checkout flow. Required for the payment process to complete. Only active when you visit the subscribe or payment pages.
Custom Fonts
The Statistician uses two typefaces — Corben (headings) and DM Sans (body text). These fonts are self-hosted and served from our own CDN on Vercel, so no request is made to Google’s servers when you load a page. Disabling this preference switches the site to system fonts (Georgia for headings, system-ui for body text).
This preference is stored in your browser’s localStorage under the key googleFontsConsent and is never sent to our servers.
Analytics
We do not use any analytics cookies or analytics tracking software. No data about which articles you read is collected or reported to any third party. Vercel may log basic server access data (IP address, browser type, page requested) as part of normal hosting operations, but this is not used for behavioural tracking.
Advertising Cookies
This site uses Google AdSense to display advertisements to non-subscribers and Mean plan subscribers. Google may use cookies to serve ads based on your visits to this and other sites. Outlier subscribers do not see ads. You can opt out of personalised advertising at Google’s Ads Settings.
Toggling this off opts you out of advertising cookies. Changes take effect on the next page load.
Browser Local Storage
Local storage is a browser feature that stores data on your device only. Unlike cookies, localStorage data is never sent to any server automatically. We use it for two things:
- articlesRead — an array of article slugs (URL identifiers) used to track whether you have already read your one free article. Contains no personal data.
- cookieConsent — stores whether you have accepted or dismissed the cookie consent banner. Contains no personal data.
- googleFontsConsent — stores your custom fonts preference from this page. Contains no personal data.
You can clear any of this data at any time through your browser’s developer tools or privacy settings.
For more detail on what data we collect and why, see our Privacy Policy.
