In the year 2000, total global military spending stood at approximately $1 trillion. By 2023, that figure had reached $2.2 trillion — more than double, in real terms. This increase spans democracies and autocracies, NATO members and non-aligned states, wealthy countries and developing ones. It is one of the most consistent global trends of the 21st century. The political systems doing the spending have not trended with equal consistency.
