The internet was designed to be decentralised. Its founding architecture — distributed nodes, open protocols, no single point of control — was explicitly intended to prevent any one actor from dominating the network. That design has not survived contact with economics. Today, five companies exercise effective control over the infrastructure, platforms, and services through which most of the world’s digital activity flows. And the concentration is increasing, not decreasing.
